The Way You Are

The Way You Are

“The Way You Are” is Tears for Fears sixth single release in general and their fourth UK top 40. The whole band wrote the song while they were on tour in support of their debut LP The Hurting in 1983 and was recorded very soon after the ending of the tour. It was in the 24th spot in the UK Singles Chart in 1983. Bassist Curt Smith performs lead vocal on the song. The single was meant as a stopgap between albums, mostly to keep the group in the public eye, it was not included on the band’s second album. In spite of its modest chart success, the song did not emerge on compact disc until the release in 1996 of the B-sides and rarities collection Saturnine Martial & Lunatic.

Curt Smith and Roland Orzabal have been uncompromising in their dislike for the song in the years following its release, Orzabal stated that it was “the point we realized we had to change direction”, Smith directly proclaimed on the other hand that it is “the worst thing we’ve done”.
